A Fig for a Kiss

I came across this tune because the Oxford University Ceilidh Band (OUCB) play it and it is a slip jig that is straight forward to play. Such things are hard to find… so I thought it would be a useful addition. Often paired with Butterfly (before or after) or we could follow it with Farewell to Walley Range. It’s a jolly tune that is satisfying to learn.

It is also a very old tune… comments on thesession.org say that it was transcribed between 1792 and 1813 at Belfast Harp Festivals and published in Edward Bunting’s The Ancient Music of Ireland, but it was also recorded in Anderson’s pocket Companion of Scottish dance tunes published in 1820… suggesting that both Scotland and Ireland claim it as one of theirs, which means we can play it in more sessions!

However, there is a debate about the key… it is really in the modal Em, which would encourage us to play C natural instead of C sharp… and sometimes this is done for the A part but not for the B part. But I think unless you are playing it slowly in a small group, you are unlikely to notice… but let me know what you think and I could change the music (although only one of the 14 transcriptions on thesession.org does this).

Some good places to hear it:
Relatively slowly in a session
Whistle workshop
Flute and Bazouki (and tutorial later)
Fiddle (and later tutorial)
Fiddle and guitar (Butterfly into Fig for a Kiss)
Tin whistle and guitar (starting at 1.35)
