Portsmouth

John suggested that we add this tune to our collection, and it is often played with Newcastle (Come ye not from Newcastle). Originally Portsmouth was a tune in John Playford’s collection, The English Dancing Master (1651) and by now it has acquired many variations. No doubt these work together. This is the version that John gave me, but if you know another, it is likely that it will work well as a harmony. In the 1976, Mike Oldfield‘s single of his multi-instrumental recording of Portsmouth gained to No.3 in the singles chart, and there is a video with him playing all the parts (except the dancing).

There are many places to hear Portsmouth played on Youtube, here are just a few!
