Happy November

The dark afternoons (!)/evenings have arrived… so best to make merry and play some tunes!

November Slow Session at 4pm Sunday 5th November upstairs at the White House as usual. Please do come and join in. The tune of the month is Peter T’s suggestion: The Origin of the World
I recommend having a go in advance… and make sure that you are starting on an F# so that you are playing it in the right key…
If you can’t make it to the White House, we are also on zoom:
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83950612678?pwd=UkhYR0hoakFXUXJnTCtobktrcDE2dz09

But I’m afraid brownies only make it to those who come in person!

December’s Slow Session is on 3rd December… and our Tenth Anniversary Session, January 2024, is on SATURDAY 6th January… please put the date in your diary!

New tune and more sessions…

I’ve added The Teetotaller’s (or Temperance) reel to the website… Hope you enjoy playing it!

There is a Euro-plus session at the White House on Sunday 22nd October: Ray says: “The EuroPlus session will meet at the White House Pub again, this Sunday 22 October starting at 4:30pm.  EuroPlus is a great place for SlowSessionistas who want to play a bit faster, or pick up some new tunes that aren’t in the Slow Session tune book. Basically, anything goes, but the session focuses on European music (mostly French and Nordic, but we’re starting to pick up a few more things) plus Scottish/Shetland tunes of all types.  The session is more or less self-organising, but this week Ray Pierrehumbert will be back to help jolly things along.”

and October has a fifth Sunday…

So we can have Fifth Sunday special session in the Covered Market… Bring along camping stools or chairs or be prepared to stand… from 2.30pm until 4pm Sunday 29th October

Hope you can come along!

Autumn greetings from Oxford Slow Session!

Happy July!

Here we are in summer… and hoping that tomorrow won’t be too hot…

July Slow Session at 3pm, Sunday 2nd July, upstairs at the White House by Tap Social

Note that we are starting at 3pm to accommodate the Comedy Festival in the evening.

Also, I’ve updated the music on the page for You’ve been a long time away, Willie Gray as Alex noticed a typo and so I rewrote it out (having long ago left the music notation that I started with as I’ve updated computers!). I’m currently on Musescore which has the benefit of being free… except they have just updated to an online version which is annoying if you don’t have wifi (eg. on the train).

Upcoming other sessions:

Sunday evenings: Irish Session at the Half Moon, St Clements from 8pm
Saturday 8th July: Queer Open Friendly Folk at the Jolly Farmers, Paradise St, from 12noon
Sunday 9th July: Engl-ish Sunday Session at Gulp Fiction, Covered Market, from 1.30pm
Sunday 9th July: Bal folk dancing and music at the Isis Farmhouse, from 2pm
Friday 14th July: Bastard English Session at the Isis Farmhouse, from 8pm
Sunday 16th July: Open Session at the White House, from 4.30pm
Monday 17th July: Auntie Shanty at the Jolly Farmers, from 7pm
Sunday 23rd July: Euro-plus Session at the White House, from 4.30pm
Friday 28th July: Open Session at the Royal Blenheim, St Ebbe’s, from 8.30pm

Hope to see you soon!

Happy June

Just a quick reminder that our regular Slow Session is on tomorrow, Sunday 4th June at 4pm, upstairs at the White House. The tune of the month is the lovely An Rogaire Dubh (and I heartily recommend Martin Hayes’s tutorial where I learned it).

I’ve made the brownies so come down and join us!

If you can’t make it, there is zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83433724118?pwd=NjZQY1FTUWFGZkN2SjhNcHBsQnEzZz09

(but no brownies via zoom).

I hope to see you soon!

Best wishes, suke

Two new tunes and session reminders

I’ve added two new tunes, a fairly easy popular Irish jig, Jimmy Ward’s favourite, and a lovely, trickier, mazurka, The Origin of the World.

And since this is a bank holiday weekend, there is not only the Euro-plus session at the White House on Sunday from 4.30pm, there is also a bandstand session from 3pm on Monday. End times are not fixed… but likely to be about two hours later. Tunes are also not fixed… for both of these sessions, it just depends on who turns up and what we can play together. Flo’s café, near the bandstand, will be open until 5pm, if you want an ice cream, cake or tea, or lunch beforehand.

And next weekend is our June Slow Session at the White House pub at 4pm (zoom included) Sunday 4th June.

Enjoy the sunshine!

Happy May

An extra reminder that May’s Slow Session will be starting early at 3pm (and finishing early as a jazz band is following us).

3pm Sunday 7th May upstairs at the White House pub
and The Sails of Kittiwake is our tune of the month, written by our own sessionista Kitty!

If you can’t make the White House, you can join us on zoom (where you miss out on Brownies!): https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84688065324?pwd=VkVUdnNreWR2YWdIV3VVZkdPZ2ZPQT09

And Monday is another bank holiday, so come and join us for an anything goes session at Florence Park Bandstand from 3pm (if you need music, please bring your own or use a gadget and the website).

3pm Monday 8th May, Florence Park Bandstand (scroll down on How to Find Us page for info)
Bandstand Bank holiday sessions

And just to keep us busy, I’ve added another tune, quite often played in local sessions so you may know it already: If You Will Not Have Me, You May Let Me Go. A 3/2 hornpipe that is worth learning just for the title!

Hope to see you soon!

Bandstand bank holidays and an EARLY May session

The forecast for May day is looking good… and if you haven’t collapsed with exhaustion after having danced in the early hours of the morning… come and join us for:

Bandstand Bank holidays!

3-6pm (earlier better than later) Florence Park Bandstand (scroll down on the How to Find Us page to see location).

Monday 1st May
Monday 8th May
Monday 29th May

It’s possible that we will continue into August (7th and 28th) but will confirm later.

And our May Slow Session is going to be EARLIER than usual as there is a jazz band following us. So we will start promptly at 3pm.

So Sunday 7th May will be at 3-5pm upstairs at the White House for the May Slow Session.
